Sweet and Sour Ham Balls

*This photo does not do justice to the recipe, as the sauce did not turn out this time.*

These are a family favorite here.  They are not touted to be healthy.  In fact, there isn't much health benefit to them apart from protein.  The recipe doesn't sound appetizing, but they ARE delicious.  I've not met one person yet who has not fallen in love with these little piggies.  Not everyone will be able to make these though, as we have found out that very few areas of the country carry ham loaf.   You can try to make your own ham loaf, but from my understanding, the hamloaf is not made purely of ham, but a mixture of ham and sausage.  (Although, it is around 60-70% ham.)

Sweet and Sour Ham Balls

Loaf Ingredients:

2 lb. hamloaf
1 lb. regular sausage
1 c. evaporated milk (whole milk can be used)
1 pkg. crushed graham crackers  (roughly 1.5 cups prepared)

Sauce Ingredients:

1 can tomato soup
1/3 c. vinegar
2c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. dry mustard  (I use prepared yellow mustard)

Directions:

Mix loaf as you would for any regular meatloaf, being sure to blend well.  Form into serving sized balls (about the size of a billiard ball) or into appetizer sized balls (about the size of a golf ball).  Place ham balls into greased 9x13 inch glass dishes, just barely touching.  (You can use metal dishes, but I prefer not to with the acidity levels in this recipe.)

Next, boil together the Sauce Ingredients.  Allow to boil for one minute and then cool to room temperature.  (Here, I often skip the cooling process, and it turns out, but the sauce ends up being thinner.)  Pour sauce over the ham balls and bake in a 350 degree oven.  The appetizer sized balls are usually ready in around 35 minutes, whereas the regular serving sized are ready in about an hour.  (Which works well with many potato dishes- which is what we serve as one of our sides.)

Pair with a cheesy potato dish (we top ours with FROSTED Flakes), Sweet Carrots, and Hawaiian style Sweet rolls, and you've got a family favorite meal!

Enjoy!
